Presbyterian Women of the Presbytery of Carlisle
Fall Gathering

On Saturday, October 20, 2007, the fall gathering of the Presbyterian Women (PW) of the Presbytery of Carlisle was held at Market Square Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg.  The Rev. James D. Brown opened the day by providing a brief history of the church.  Dottie Hotchkiss led the women in devotions and focused on “God’s Reluctant Servants.”   Scripture was taken from Exodus 4: 10-16.  A solo entitled Holy Wisdom, Lamp of Learning was sung by Jill Smeltzer.  Lois Gayman, played the piano.  Hymns sung related to the theme.  Today’s program focused on mission.

A business meeting was held and conducted by the moderator, Joyce McCormick.  Secretary and treasurer’s reports were accepted.  Various officers presented information related to their responsibilities.  Cluster leaders and the women announced forthcoming activities in their respective church PWs. The moderator shared information communicated from the Churchwide Coordinating Team(CT)
Honorary life memberships will now cost $95.00 (no increase has occurred since 1988).  Horizons Bible Studies are available in large print and in Spanish, and soon in Korean.  The Thank Offering Packets are now available.   The January/February issue of Horizons will focus on the 20th Anniversary of PW.  A new History Exhibit Kit is available to help PW groups create their own Amazing Heritage history display.  Additional information is included in a memo given to moderators and members of the Carlisle Presbytery PW coordinating team.

PW may want to mark their calendars with the following dates.  The Synod Gathering at Waynesburg College is June 12-14, 2008. The Churchwide Gathering in Louisville, KY is July 11-15, 2009.

The spring gathering, our next gathering, is on April 19, 2008 at Centre Presbyterian Church in Loysville.  This will be the annual meeting with installation of officers.   The program will focus on two themes.  1.  “What God Has Done For Me.”  Testamonials will be given by PW.  2.  “Celebrating What Is Right In the World.”

Following the completion of surveys and feedback from PW throughout the Carlisle Presbytery, it was decided by the coordinating team to keep three gatherings a year.

The program today focused on mission.  Dottie Trostle, moderator elect, introduced two speakers from Lend a Hand.  Mr. Skip Becker discussed the history of Lend a Hand and Mr. Bart Richwine discussed Hurricane Katrina and other disaster relief provided by Lend a Hand.  Following the presentation, the PW at Market Square served a delicious lunch with a variety of tasty soups and pastries for dessert.

Following lunch and an opportunity for socialization, there was a mission fair.  The following ladies and gentlemen were available to discuss their mission trips.  Doris Feil; Nicaragua, Elizabeth Terry and Greg Gable; Palestine, Rev. Arlene Dunn; Mississippi, Anne Bonne; Honduras, Rev. Dr. Jan Nolting Carter; Malawi, Bobby Kitzmiller; Mission at Eastward in Maine, Ann Cavannaugh; D’Iberville, LA, Karen Schmidt; Church World Service, Sharon and Don Bixel; Madagascar, and Barbara Rhoades; Bridge of Hope Crafts from Peru.

The day closed with a hymn entitled Song of Hope led by Jill Smelzer.
